BOA Clinical Leaders Programme

The BOA National Clinical Leaders Programme (CLP) is now in its sixth year. The programme is derived from the previous BOA Transitional Fellowship Programme, however the CLP has a wider reach with the addition of Senior Trainees (ST8 or above), newly appointed consultants and SAS Surgeons.

The programme is delivered through a combination of master classes, tutorials and coaching sessions with experts. The legacy of this one year development programme is a significant innovation and improvement project delivered by each clinical leader to either their Trusts or Specialist Societies strategic change agenda and improvement of T&O services across the board.

For 2019

Further information, including provisional course dates, is available on the CLP flyer. Please use the information on this webpage for details on how to apply.

Cost, eligibility and how to apply

Am I eligible?:

In order to be eligible for the CLP, you must be a either a Senior Trainee (ST8 or above when the programme runs), a newly appointed consultant (less than 3 years) or a SAS Surgeon (FRCS Tr & Orth).

Candidates applying for the scheme via the specialist-society-funded and self-funded routes must be BOA members at the time of applying. Appointed fellows for the Trust-funded places must be BOA members by the 1st September 2019.

How do I apply?:

There are three routes into the programme:

  • BOA National Clinical Leaders Fellowships – recruited by Trusts hosting National Clinical Leaders Fellowship
  • Specialist Society Sponsored Fellows
  • Individual Applications (self-funded):
    • Newly appointed consultants or senior SAS doctors (FRCS Tr & Orth)
    • Senior trainees (ST8 or above when programme runs)

For 2019/20, some Trusts are already commencing with recruitment for their fellows (e.g. via NHS jobs). The BOA will open for Specialist-society-funded and self-funded places in Spring 2019.

The price of the 2019/20 programme is £3,120 (including VAT). This cost includes all fees, learning materials and day delegate hospitality. The cost does not cover travel or accommodation.

You can choose to apply as an individual to self-fund the programme, or seek funding through the Host Trusts and Specialist Societies that are sponsoring the programme.

Fellows on the programme will be given the option to enrol in an additional course, running in parallel to the CLP, which has accreditation for a CMI Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership. The cost of the CMI programme is £530+VAT (£636 including VAT). If a fellow wishes to enrol in this additional course the cost would need to be covered by the fellow, not the Trust or Specialist Society who may be funding their place on the CLP.

Please note places on the CLP are limited and will be confirmed after a review of your application and possibly an interview. The BOA will need to ensure that there are at least 24 successful applicants to run the programme for 2019/20.
